Clinical assessment of brain perfusion in newborn infants with arterial spin labeling perfusion MRI

چکیده
INTRODUCTION. Many approaches have been applied to evaluate brain perfusion in neonates: brain ultrasound, near-infrared spectroscopy, and positron emission tomography (PET). However perfusion weighted imaging (PWI) MRI has been shown to enable in vivo direct measurements of brain perfusion in different brain regions. Recent advances have lead to the development of non-contrast agent based Arterial Spin Labeling (ASL) PWI. ASL-PWI relies upon the magnetic labeling of incoming blood flow to provide a change in contrast on the order of 1-2% that is proportional to the amount of perfusion present. This technique has been applied to study brain perfusion of older children [1-2], but only very limited data exists in neonates [3] because of the technical and clinical challenges to obtain sufficient signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) with spatial resolution sufficient to resolve cortical gray matter and white matter and basal ganglia in neonates. Our study assesses brain perfusion patterns of normal term newborn infants using an ASL-PWI MRI sequence, and compares regional cerebral blood flow measurements to data previously described [3-5].

Assessment of functional development in normal infant brain using arterial spin labeled perfusion MRI
Arterial spin labeled (ASL) perfusion MRI provides a noninvasive approach for longitudinal imaging of regional brain function in infants. In the present study, continuous ASL (CASL) perfusion MRI was carried out in normally developing 7- and 13-month-old infants while asleep without sedation. The 13-month infant group showed an increase (P<0.05) of relative CBF in frontal regions as compared to...

BACKGROUND Arterial spin labeling (ASL) perfusion-weighted imaging (PWI) by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been shown to be useful for identifying asphyxiated newborns at risk of developing brain injury, whether or not therapeutic hypothermia was administered. However, this technique has been only rarely used in newborns until now, because of the challenges to obtain sufficient signal-to-...

Several methods are now available for measuring cerebral perfusion and related hemodynamic parameters using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). One class of techniques utilizes electromagnetically labeled arterial blood water as a noninvasive diffusible tracer for blood flow measurements. The electromagnetically labeled tracer has a decay rate of T1, which is sufficiently long to allow perfusion ...

PURPOSE Abnormal brain perfusion is a critical mechanism in neonatal brain injury. The aim of the present study was to compare Cerebral Blood Flow (CBF) evaluated with ASL MRI in three groups of neonates: preterms without brain lesions on MRI (PN), preterms with periventricular white matter lesions (PNp) and term neonates with normal MRI (TN). The correlation between CBF and clinical outcome wa...

Perfusion provides oxygen and nutrients to tissues and is closely tied to tissue function while disorders of perfusion are major sources of medical morbidity and mortality. It has been almost two decades since the use of arterial spin labeling (ASL) for noninvasive perfusion imaging was first reported. While initial ASL magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies focused primarily on technological...
